IMadonnari 2007 Street Painting Festival – Santa Barbara, CA

Douglas Rouse - A Gift From Colorado 3959

An IMadonnari is held on Memorial Day weekend each year at the Santa Barbara Mission is a fundraiser for Children’s Creative Project. A tradition from Western Europe, the chalk artists were known as “Madonnari” or “Madonnari Painters” because they reproduced icons of the Madonna. http://www.imadonnarifestival.com/im.html

These artists work very hard often on hands and knees in the hot sun to produce this beautiful colorful art. Due to it’s nature the art will fade or be smeared in a few short days. The photograph is the only way to keep this work alive. If possible, I try to find some connection between the artist and the art in my photo’s. I have updated with all the information I have. Please feel free to email me additional information about individual photo’s if you have it.
